GRIESBACH CASHES IN FIRST TUNDRA WIN AT WIR

More coming sooKAUKAUNA, Wis. (May 17, 2025) – Right place. Right time. That was the mantra of the Bear 96 presented by Great Lakes Testing for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series on Saturday at Wisconsin International Raceway.

In the end it was Grant Griesbach who stayed out of trouble, held back a pair of hungry contenders and took advantage of some misfortune to grab the $6,000 payday.

Griesbach secured the lead late in the race when Dalton Zehr experienced a mechanical failure and was forced to drop out of the running. Griesbach cruised to the win in front of fast qualifier Gabe Sommers and impressive newcomer Cody Vanderloop.

The 96-lap main got off to a slow start with two major incidents in the first five laps. After Kody King secured the lead early, contact between Sawyer Effertz and Jesse Oudenhoven caused a melee exiting turn four. The incident collected the likes of JJ Vanderloop, Casey Johnson, Brock Heinrich, Riley Stenjem and others.

On the restart Sommers was able to restart on the inside of King.  After a couple of laps of side-by-side battling the two made contact, sending both to the tail and handing the lead to Griesbach.

At this juncture, Jevin Guralski looked to be making a speedy move to the front. He grabbed Second just after the lap-four restart, but experienced a mechanical failure that sent him into the outside of the wall exiting turn four.  Once again several other racers were collected including Randy Schuler and Maxwell Schultz.

Griesbach was able to pace the field for the next 20 laps as the field settled in. The driver on the move was Dalton Zehr. Despite being caught up in the first incident, Zehr cruised back through the field. He was able to secure Third on lap 20 and grabbed Second from Bobby Kendall just three laps later.

Ten laps later Zehr was on the hunt for the lead. He swiftly made a pass on the backstretch and started to pace the field.  From that point to the midway fuel break, drivers settled into their spots for a late-race chess match.

It appeared Zehr was bound to take the win with a healthy margin in the final ten laps. Behind him Griesbach was working furiously to hold off Cody Vanderloop and Sommers who had made his way back through the field.

The race took a sudden turn with just four laps remaining when Zehr fell off the pace. A mechanical issue sent Zehr to the pits early as the trio of Griesbach, Vanderloop and Sommers zipped past.

Over the final three laps Vanderloop kept close in Second while holding off Sommers. Vanderloop made one final charge to the inside in an attempt to steal the win, but snapped sideways exiting four, allowing Sommers to capture Second at the line.

Griesbach looked stunned as he exited his car to celebrate victory. He commented on a wild weekend that saw him in Victory Lane the previous night with the Midwest Truck Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mr. Brew’s Taphouse Race Notes:

  • Gabe Sommers set a new TUNDRA track record in qualifying (18.840 seconds) eclipsing the time set by Casey Johnson in 2021 (18.892 seconds).
  • The top nine qualifiers turned a lap under 19 seconds.
  • Dalton Zehr led the most laps (56).
  • Gabe Sommers and Cody Vanderloop shared the hard-charger bonus points. Both drivers were a +7 through inverted drivers.
  • Lowell Bennett kicked off his 50th year of racing with his best TUNDRA finish in Fourth
  • Harley Jankowski made the most of his TUNDRA debut, finishing 10th
  • Brock Heinrich, Bobby Kendall, and Casey Johsnon (fast dash) won the preliminary races
  • JJ Vanderloop pulled double duty, also racing in the Pro Late Model undercard – he picked up the victory in the Alburetor 28.

The next event for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series is the Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial at Marshfield Motor Speedway.  TUNDRA will be joined by the Legends, Upper Midwest Vintage Series, Bandits and Xtreme 4s. Qualifying is at 5:30 with racing at 7pm.n….

TUNDRA ENTRY / REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE

GREEN BAY, Wis. (April 13, 2025) – Registration and Entry forms are now available for the 2025 TUNDRA Super Late Model Series season and opening event.

Registration explanation and forms are available at the Drivers page.

The season begins on Saturday, May 17 at Wisconsin International Raceway with the $6,000-to-win Bear 96.  It is the richest payday in TUNDRA’s history.

TUNDRA revamped its registration this year, going away from its traditional purchase of tires up front in favor of a more conventional race event. The intention is to make things more manageable for non-members to join the events while still providing savings and perks for member drivers.

The 2025 season features five events – four stand-alone TUNDRA events and a co-branded event with the Alive for Five Series at Dells Raceway Park on August 9.

Along with an increased payout for the event at Wisconsin International Raceway is a fully enhanced weekend of racing on May 16 and 17.

Reviving the Spring Classic, the Friday May 16 event will feature a full show on the quarter mile including the WIR ¼-Mile Late Models, Street Stocks, Wisconsin Sport Trucks and Sizzlin’ 4s. Saturday’s event will feature the Bear 96 with the TUNDRA Super Late Models and the Alburetor 28 for Pro Late Models. The $1,000-to-win Pro Late Model race remembers the late Al Golueke.

TUNDRA 2025 SCHEDULE SET

GREEN BAY, Wis. (December 26, 2024) – The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series has set its schedule for the 2025 season. The series’ 15th season will feature five races at four tracks and it’s first co-branded event at Dells Raceway Park.

The series begins once again at Wisconsin International Raceway. The event will be Saturday afternoon May 17. This event is set to expand for 2025. More details will be available soon.

The second stop for TUNDRA will be at Marshfield Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 14 for the popular Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial. The Bev race has proven to be one of the banner events each season for TUNDRA.

TUNDRA will mark its midway point of 2025 at Dells Raceway Park for the North American Cup on Saturday, July 5. This event has become important to the series as it has recognized and remembered Carl Wegner. This year the series will also remember Ed Szelagowski, who passed away this off season.

For the first time, TUNDRA will work with a track in a co-branded event. The Badgerstate 100 is an existing race in the Alive For Five Series on Saturday, August 9. TUNDRA teams will receive points for their participation in the event with some extra incentive to be announced soon.

Finally, the series will wrap up on Labor Day – Monday, September 1 – at Golden Sands Speedway with the Cleaver Classic. The race, quickly growing in popularity, remembers friend of the series David Kronberger.

MONDEIK MASTERS CLEAVER CLASSIC, FREDRICKSON IS CHAMPION

PLOVER, Wis. (September 2, 2024) – Justin Mondeik dominated Monday’s Cleaver Classic at Golden Sands Speedway, leading every lap on the way to his second win of the season. However, it was young Ty Fredrickson who held the biggest celebration of the day as he locked down the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series 2024 Championship.

Mondeik started on the outside of the front row and lead all 108 laps of the main event. He had to patiently pick his way through traffic, but maintained a strong lead throughout. Jeremy Lepak dashed his way to Second, Ken’s Sports Fast Qualifier Mike Lichtfeld made a surge to Third, Fredrickson was Fourth and Colin Reffner was Fifth.

More coming soon…

TUNDRA ROUNDS OUT 2024 SEASON MONDAY WITH CLEAVER CLASSIC

GREEN BAY, Wis. (August 30, 2024) – The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series will round out its 2024 season on Monday, September 2 at Golden Sands Speedway with the Cleaver Classic.  The 108-lap feature honors the late David Kronberger – a fan, friend, and supporter of the series as well as many of its racers.

EPYK Media Rookie Ty Fredrickson is looking to make history on Monday, as he has the chance to be the first rookie to take the series title.  Fredrickson won the last TUNDRA event at Golden Sands Speedway, the Blue Knight 88 on July 19.  With his win Fredrickson put himself 20 points ahead in the point standings.

Looking to track him down is Brock Heinrich. The Brockstar has been a model of consistency this season, and will look to put himself back onto the podium after a Second Place finish at Golden Sands in July.  Not far behind Heinrich is the team of Dalton Zehr and John Beale. Beale finished Third in the July race and will have a chance to claim the second straight title for his team. He trails by 36 points.

Justin Mondiek – a former TUNDRA winner at GSS – also has a chance to claim the Championship. He will need to have a strong day to make up the 42 point spread to the top spot.  Behind him, rookie Jevin Guralski looks to keep his momentum alive and seal off the final spot in the TUNDRA Top Five.

Among other contenders to watch will be the 2024 Golden Sands Speedway Champion Colin Reffner. Reffner’s Blue Knight 88 bid was cut short with mechanical problems back in July. Expect to see him up front on Monday.  He may also be joined by July fast qualifier Travis Volm, who had a strong showing at Golden Sands this season.

The 2024 GSS Pro Late Model Champion will be in the field, as well. Kendrick Kreyer made his TUNDRA debut at the third-mile two seasons ago and recorded a Top Ten as well as a dash win. He’ll be looking to make some noise on Monday, as well.

Former TUNDRA winner at Golden Sands Mike Lichtfeld will join the field for the second time this season. Lichtfeld recorded a podium finish in his lone start at Dells Raceway Park this year.  He can be extended to contend along with GSS track record holder Jeremy Lepak.

Several drivers will be making their series debut including Levon Vandergeest, who was a title contender at Golden Sands this year. Payton Olson, Matthew Gajewski, and Bobby Wautier.

TUNDRA will be joined by the Pro Late Models, Wisconsin Sport Trucks, and American Super Cups. Fan gates open at 11:30, qualifying is at 12:45, and racing begins at 2pm.

FREDRICKSON SCORES SECOND TUNDRA WIN IN BLUE KNIGHT 88

Results

PLOVER, Wis. (July 19, 2024) – Ty Fredrickson patiently picked his way through the field to take the lead with 28 laps remaining in the Blue Knight 88 at Golden Sands Speedway Friday. He was able to hold off the advances of Brock Heinrich on the way to his second TUNDRA Super Late Model Series win of the season.

Despite starting Sixth, Fredrickson fell back to Ninth at the start of the race and had to work his way to the front again.  Once he took the lead, he was unable to run away and had to turn Heinrich aside several times in the final laps.  John Beale also came to the doorstep to challenge the leaders late.

“On the initial start we got shuffled back a little bit, so I knew I was going to have to be a little harder on my tires than I wanted to run them down,” Fredrickson said. “Luckily, I was able to get by Brock when I still had some tires left.  After that I was just skating around and hoping he couldn’t get under me.”

The win backed up Fredrickson’s fast time and win in the season opener at Wisconsin International Raceway.  It also put him into the history books as the first rookie to win more than a single race in a season.

Jerad DeBoer paced the field early in the 88-lap main.  Although he looked comfortable out front, a challenger arrived in Justin Mondeik during a restart on lap 13 after Colin Reffner experienced fuel line issues with his machine.

Mondeik took the lead and left DeBoer to deal with Heinrich and Beale.  At this point Fredrickson also took advantage of the high line on a restart to move into the Top Five. The top group settled in to ride until a caution paused the action on lap 30 when Frank Nitzke’s powerplant let go.

On the restart it was Heinrich who was able to maneuver past Mondeik.  He grabbed the lead on lap 34, leaving Mondeik to deal with Fredrickson, who swept past Beale and DeBoer on the restart.  Two laps after Heinrich took the lead, Fredrickson grabbed Second and DeBoer followed to Third.

Fredrickson rode behind Heinrich until lap 60 when he was able to sweep to the inside and grab the top spot. On the same lap Beale slid past DeBoer to take Third. He had nearly a straightaway to make up on the lead duo.

As the laps clicked off Heinrich kept the gap close, and slowly started to close.  Beale chopped away even quicker and caught the leaders with under ten laps to go.  In the final five laps Heinrich erased the three-car-length gap. He looked to the outside coming to the white flag, but could not generate enough of a challenge.  At the same time, Beale took a look to the inside, but would have to settle for Third.

Behind them Jevin Guralski, who had sliced his way through the field, picked up his first TUNDRA Top Five coming home Fourth. Jerad DeBoer ended his best day at a TUNDRA event by rounding out the Top Five.

The result pushed Fredrickson to a 20-point lead over Heinrich with just one event remaining in 2024.  The team of Beale and Dalton Zehr sit Third 36 points out and Justin Mondeik is still within range of a title 42 points out in Fourth. The final event of the 2024 TUNDRA Super Late Model season is again at Golden Sands Speedway. The Cleaver Classic 108 will be held on Labor Day – Monday, September 2 – with a 2pm start time.

TUNDRA REVS UP FOR BLUE KNIGHT 88

GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 18, 2024) – The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series will make its fourth stop of the 2024 season Friday night at Golden Sands Speedway for the Blue Knight 88 honoring the legendary Tom Reffner.

It will be the first time TUNDRA has raced at Golden Sands on a Friday since 2020 and the first scheduled Friday visit since 2013.  Justin Mondeik was victorious when the race was made up on a Friday night four years ago. Paige Decker won (ironically enough) on Friday, July 19, 2023.

EPYK Media Rookie Ty Fredrickson leads the charge into Golden Sands coming off a Second Place finish in the series’ last race at Dells Raceway Park. Fredrickson won the Trickle Memorial earlier this season at Golden Sands and finished on the podium in the TUNDRA event there last season.

The Top Three are separated by just 25 points with Justin Mondeik in hot pursuit. Mondeik is a former GSS Champion and winner in TUNDRA action. Heinrich has had up and down luck at Golden Sands in TUNDRA action, but has shown good speed. Rounding out the top four will be John Beale. Last year’s co-Champion tags in for Dalton Zehr and has found the podium in TUNDRA action at Golden Sands before.

Another who will look to play a factor will be Colin Reffner – who honors his grandfather in this race and is a past fast qualifier at Plover for TUNDRA events. Former Golden Sands Champions Mark Eswein and Frank Nitzke will also be in the mix.  Last year’s fast qualifier Travis Volm also hopes to play a factor.

There may be some father and son battling as both Lowell and Braison Bennett are expected to join.

TUNDRA will be joined by the Pro Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, and Six Cylinders. Qualifying is at 6:30 with racing at 7:45.

SWANSON SCORES NORTH AMERICAN CUP WIN

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (July 6, 2024) – Tristan Swanson cashed in on the biggest winner’s pay day in TUNDRA Super Late Model Series history Saturday night at Dells Raceway Park.

After battling with young gun Ty Fredrickson and local favorite Mike Lichtfeld, Swanson was able to work his way into the lead in the second half of the race and carefully pick his way through lapped traffic. Swanson scored $5,000 by taking the North American Cup Presented by Assembly Products & Tom and Sharon Lichtfeld in Remembrance of Carl Wegner.

“It’s just unreal, honestly,” Swanson said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d be in this position. It’s so surreal.”

Swanson was quick to thank his family and his team, plus the aid of the team of his top competitor on the day – Team 36.

“It’s hats off to my team,” Swanson said. “It’s pretty much just my family and I, a four-person team. This one’s for all the small-town families that don’t think they can do it. They can do it.”

The first half of the races saw four stoppages for cautions, all spins with the competitors continuing on. The first of those cautions, perhaps, was the most heart-stopping.

Seven laps in Fredrickson had worked his way to the front and past early-race leader and fellow EPYK Media Rookie contender Jevin Guralski.  Guralski kept close tabs on Fredrickson and made a run to his back bumper coming back to lap ten. Unfortunately, Guralski made significant contact, which sent Fredrickson spinning.  Guralski tapped out via the gentleman’s agreement, heading to the tail and returning Fredrickson to the lead.

That incident was the start of a dazzling run by Guralski, who patiently and powerfully picked his way back through the field in the remaining laps of the race. He ended up with a Sixth Place finish.

At that same time, Mike Lichtfeld and Swanson were on the march towards the Top Five.  Brent Edmunds, who was second fastest in qualifying, was also on the charge. He restarted alongside Fredrickson and took the lead.  Swanson and Lichtfeld filed in line behind Fredrickson.

Things got furious up front right around lap 13. Fredrickson returned to the bumper of Edmunds as Lichtfeld was attempting to go around the outside of the Top Three. On lap 16 Edmunds slipped, allowing Fredrickson to slide back to the lead, bringing Swanson along, and backing Lichtfeld off into Fourth.

As the laps clicked off Swanson stayed close to Fredrickson and Lichtfeld close the gap to create a three-car battle for the lead.  This was until a caution on lap 32 which restacked the front of the field.

On the restart Lichtfeld took the outside lane. He was unable to power around the outside and Swanson slipped back to the inside for Second.  Another spin on lap 38 reset the field once again.

This restart saw Lichtfeld lead momentarily before Fredrickson was able to wrestle the lead back. Again Swanson followed into Second. This time Dalton Zehr and Justin Mondeik were toward the front after working through traffic. This restart was short-lived as another spin brough out the final yellow.

A single file restart with 59 laps remaining proved to be the last chance for anyone to make a move off a caution.  Fredrickson led Lichtfeld, Swanson, and Zehr back to the line.  Fredrickson built a lead and Swanson slipped past Lichtfeld into Second.

Slowly Swanson began to reel in Fredrickson.  He was to his bumper on lap 60 and began taking looks to the inside line. The opportunity finally came on lap 62.  Swanson powered past at the line on the following lap. Lichtfeld attempted to follow through into Second, but a slip up allowed Fredrickson to tuck back in line.

Over the final 30 laps Swanson picked his way through traffic. Both he and Fredrickson distanced themselves from the competition.  Zehr closed in on Lichtfeld to challenge for Third, but was held off in the final laps.  Behind them Max Kahler cruised from behind the invert to close out the Top Five.

The next event for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series is Friday, July 19 at Golden Sands Speedway. The Blue Knight 88 honors the late Tom Reffner.

TUNDRA READY TO RUMBLE FOR BIGGEST WINNER’S PRIZE SATURDAY AT DRP

GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 3, 2024) – The biggest winner’s prize in TUNDRA Super Late Model Series history will be on the line Saturday at Dells Raceway Park. The North American Cup Presented by Assembly Products and Tom and Sharon Lichtfeld in Remembrance of Carl Wegner will pay $5,000 to the winner.

Plenty of heavy hitters will be ready to try to take the prize – including past TUNDRA winners at DRP Dalton Zehr and Mike Lichtfeld.  Lichtfeld captured the TUNDRA win last season at his home track while Zehr last took honors in 2022.

Looking to challenge for a first series win at the track will be point leader Justin Mondeik, current runner-up Brock Heinrich, and top rookie Ty Fredrickson.  Fredrickson won the IceBreaker 100 at DRP this past April and has shown good speed at the facility.

There will be some darkhorses looking to snag the prize as well. EPYK Media Rookie Jevin Guralski comes in with momentum after a win last week at Marshfield. Nick Egan, Braden Berge, Brent Edmunds, and Tristan Swanson have all had strong runs at DRP in the past and will be looking to make noise in their TUNDRA season debuts.

TUNDRA will be joined by the 602 Late Models, Sportsman, Bandits, Sixers, and High School Racing Association.  Qualifying is at 4:30 with racing at 6pm.
