MARSHFIELD, Wis. (July 30, 2022) – Justin Mondeik overwhelmed a stout field of TUNDRA Super Late Model Series competitors in Saturday’s Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial Presented by IncredibleBank and A&A Lock Service at Marshfield Motor Speedway. It was Mondeik’s third career series win, and one that helped him pad his point lead at the halfway point of the season.

Beyond the pure racing implications, the race was one that Mondeik has wanted to capture for years as it honors a fan and family that watched him mature through his career.

“When we started four cylinders, we weren’t any good. Bev and the whole Aschenbrenner family would come over after every race and were so genuine and friendly with us. This is a really big win for us,” Mondeik commented.

Mondeik slipped past Andy Monday on lap 15 and survived a late restart alongside defending race winner and series Champion Riley Stenjem. He then outlasted a late run by fast qualifier John Beale, who would finish Second.

“I definitely didn’t want to see that caution at the end, but I felt like we were able to save a little bit while we were out front,” Mondeik said. “Riley’s always tough for sure, but I knew we had a really good piece tonight.”

Before a lap was put into the record books, the starting field experienced a major shake up when Darren Jackson and Jesse Oudenhoven tangled entering turn three.  Both Oudenhoven and Terry Schoppenhorst would have their race end. Jackson and others involved were able to make repairs and rejoin the field before the green fell.

On the second attempt, EPYK Media Rookie Kole Guralski seized the top spot from fellow front-row starter Curt Tillman.  Andy Monday followed into Second shortly after while Tillman was left to deal with Stenjem in a battle for Third.

Monday slipped to the bottom line and stole the lead from Guralski coming to lap four.  Meanwhile Stenjem was still looking for a line around Tillman as Mondeik raced side-by-side with Brock Heinrich in their rear-view mirror.

Mondeik was able to make some head way on the outside line, pushing past Stenjem on lap six. Two laps later Mondeik was able to open the inside line on Tillman to take Third. That opened the door for Stenjem, as well.  Behind them Travis Volm, Mark Eswein and Ken’s Sports Fast Qualifier John Beale were closing in on the Top Five.

At the lap 10 mark Mondeik was able to work his way around Guralski for Second and set his sights on Monday.  Four laps later Mondeik was at Monday’s doorstep.  He charged to the inside line to steal the lead on the backstretch, officially taking the lead on lap 15.

As Mondeik started to build a lead, the racing behind him in the Top Five was furious.  Eswein and Beale sliced their way into the Top Five by lap 20.  Soon they found themselves locked in battle with Eswein turning away several of Beale’s challenges.  The two remained locked in battle for much of the race as they closed in on Andy Monday, who had surrendered Second to Stenjem.

On lap 36 Beale surged past Monday and brought Eswein along.  The duo started to close the gap on Stenjem for Second while Mondeik had set sail, opening up a large advantage.  That advantage was erased, however, with 13 laps remaining for a spin by Tyler Radavich.

The restart would bring Stenjem to the outside of Mondeik with Beale and Monday in the second row.  Stenjem appeared to slip as he was sideways coming back to green. The bobble was all Mondeik needed to capitalize and run away from the pack after the drop of the green.

Stenjem was left to deal with Beale and Eswein over the final ten laps.  Both would move past and try to set their sights on Mondeik.  Although Beale was able to shrink the advantage Mondeik had built, he simply did not have enough time to issue a challenge.  Eswein rounded out the podium behind Mondeik and Beale, Stenjem held on for Fourth, and Andy Monday rounded out the Top Five.

The win helped Mondeik build his point lead over defending Champion Riley Stenjem. The team of Beale and Dalton Zehr were able to move to Third in the standings, setting up what should be an intriguing second half of the 2022 TUNDRA season.

Due to the rescheduled race at Marhsfield, TUNDRA will race on back-to-back Saturday’s for the first time in series history.  TUNDRA heads to State Park Speedway this Saturday, August 6. Qualifying is set for 5:45pm with racing at 7pm.  TUNDRA will be joined by the Wisconsin Sport Trucks, Dairyland Vintage Series, and Bandits.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 26, 2022) – Despite a seven-week postponement, the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series is prepared to invade Marshfield Motor Speedway with yet another strong field this Saturday for the Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial Presented by Incredible Bank and A&A Lock Service.

The series hosted it’s second event of the season last week at Norway Speedway. That event showcased the contenders, and who might be ones to watch at the sweeping half-mile this weekend.

Defending TUNDRA Champion Riley Stenjem dominated last year’s Bev Memorial and showed strength with a Second Place run at Norway. He was outraced to the checkered flag by Dalton Zehr, who will tag in John Beale this time around. Beale most recently won the John Brevik Memorial at Marshfield on July 9. The third racer on the podium was new TUNDRA point leader Justin Mondeik, who has scored nine feature wins outside of TUNDRA action this season. All three will be favorites to find the podium again.

Standing in their way will be a host of TUNDRA Travelers looking to make their marks on the 2022 season, including former Bev winner Colin Reffner.  Jesse Oudenhoven, Chad Butz, Mark Mackesy, and James Swan have enjoyed Top Ten runs in TUNDRA action at Marshfield in the past.  Last season, Brock Heinrich took fast time in the event, and he’ll look to build on that in this year’s visit. The likes of Max Kahler, Jordan Thiel, Andy Monday, and Corey Jankowski will also be looking to make their presence known.

A pair of EPYK Media rookies should also have eyes on them. Leading rookie contender Barrett Polhemus has scored two Top Ten finishes already this season. Kole Guralski rebounded from bad luck on his way to an impressive Sixth Place finish at Norway.

Several other outsiders could pose a major threat including former track Champion Darren Jackson, and central Wisconsin standouts Mark Eswein, Travis Volm, and Wyatt Brooks..

TUNDRA will be joined by the Xtreme 4s, Bandits, 6 Shooters, and Skidders. Fan gates for the event open at 4:30 on Saturday. Qualifying is scheduled for 5:45 with racing at 7 pm.

NORWAY, Mich. (July 16, 2022) – It almost looked as Dalton Zehr wasn’t going to be repeating his TUNDRA Super Late Model Series victory at Norway Speedway. But almost doesn’t count when it comes to Super Late Model Racing.

Zehr rebounded late in the race after falling from the Top Three and outgunned defending TUNDRA Champion Riley Stenjem to pick up his 14th career TUNDRA win. It was a repeat performance of the series’ last visit to Norway for Zehr as he captured fast time and the feature win.

“It’s fantastic, it’s great to be in TUNDRA Victory Lane again. It’s been a couple years since that happened,” Zehr said.

The race featured an incredible back-and-forth battle between James Swan and Colin Reffner.  Zehr said he waited paitently behind that battle to make sure if anything happened that he wouldn’t be caught up in it. While waiting, however, Zehr was passed and taken out of the Top Three.  He showed resurgence after a red flag to clean up fluid with 19 to go and went on to capture the lead for good with five laps remaining.

“I thought the car was too tight,” Zehr said. “During that red flag I had a mental reset, opened up my entries a little bit and, all the sudden, we were a good car again.”

The field was led to green by Lou Goss and Bryan Monday.  The duo exchanged the lead through the first two cautions on laps one and two – including an incident that saw Justin Mondeik fall to the tail.

Once the field started to get into motion, James Swan and Colin Reffner flexed their muscle.  Swan tailed Monday for seven laps until he was able to make his move, slipping into the lead. Reffner followed swiftly into Second and Monday was left to deal with Brock Heinrich and Chad Butz.

Swan and Reffner started to break away from the field and avoided a near caution when Riley Stenjem went through the grass in turn two and fell to the tail end of the top ten on lap 14.  Meanwhile Zehr was picking his way through the field and made his way into the top five just before lap 20.

The top two continued to put on a dazzling display for the lead in the first third of the feature.  Reffner muscled his way to the inside of Swan and took the lead on lap 23.  He went on to pace the next few circuits until Swan took the inside line and eventually the lead back on lap 27.  The battle was far from over, however.

Another yellow fell for a spin on lap 28, restacking the field for a single file restart. Swan got away on the restart until an incident sent Jordan Thiel off the track for another yellow on lap 29.  On the restart chaos ensued. Mondeik and Kole Guralski hooked, allowing Stenjem to slip past into Sixth.  At the same time Reffner made his move to take the lead back.

On lap 35 Zehr moved past Heinrich into Third and brought both Butz and Stenjem into Fourth and Fifth. Another yellow fell just before halfway as Mickey Schallie stalled off turn four.

Just after the restart Reffner and Swan stepped away again, leaving Zehr to try to fend off Butz and Stenjem. Eventually they would both push past and put Zehr back to Fifth.  The field then rode through the next dozen laps until they got into lapped traffic. Two lapped cars then spun as Reffner closed in, leaving everyone to take evasive action. Unfortunately, Heinrich tagged the stalled car of MG Gajewski causing heavy damage on Gajewski’s machine.  The result was a red flag to clean up fluid in turn two with 19 laps remaining.

After the restart another altercation involving Monday and Butz slowed the field and, by rule, put the field back to double file restart formation as they had chosen.  After the restart Stenjem rocketed into the second spot from the outside and went to work on Reffner for the lead.  Zehr slipped by Swan for Third at the same moment.

Stenjem eventually secured the inside line and took the lead on lap 60.  Zehr followed quickly into the Second spot. Not far behind, Mondeik was trying to make his moves, securing Fourth on lap 61.

The lead duo stepped away to decide the race. Stenjem furiously looked to hold the inside line as Zehr put intense pressure on the defending TUNDRA Champion.  On a couple of occasions Zehr got his nose under Stenjem, but allowed him to straighten his car out.  Mondeik then slipped past Reffner with 7 laps to go, but he was a full straightaway behind the leaders.

Zehr found his opportunity as he was able to get inside Stenjem on lap 69.  Despite trying to hold his ground, Zehr led by the time they hit the stripe for lap 70.  A final caution with two to go set up a green, white, checkered situation, but Zehr proved to be too strong and cruised to the checkered.

Stenjem survived an eventful race to finish Second, Justin Mondeik recovered from the early incident to finish Third, and after putting on a wildly entertaining back-and-forth battle for the lead for most of the race Colin Reffner and James Swan rounded out the Top Five.

The next stop for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series is the rescheduled Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial at Marshfield Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 30. TUNDRA will be joined by the Xtreme 4s, Bandits, 6-Shooters and Skidders.  Qualifying is at 5:45pm and racing is at 7.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 13, 2022) – It will be no easy task to grab the first TUNDRA Super Late Model Series checkered flag at Norway Speedway since the series last visited in 2014.  A field full of regional and local talent will be on display this Saturday, July 16.

Over 30 entries are expected to do battle for the $2,500 top prize at the third-mile located on the Dickinson County Fairgrounds. Interestingly enough, all three drivers who finished on the podium in 2014 will also be in the field.  Dalton Zehr, Dan Lindsley, and Mark Mackesy will be hoping to repeat their success of the last visit.

Since that time Zehr has won three TUNDRA championships and become a nationally-recognized Super Late Model racer. Lindsley captured the Norway Speedway track Championship, and Mark Mackesy picked up numerous feature wins.

There won’t be a shortage of drivers who have come onto the scene both regionally and at Norway who will look to be keeping them from more success. Justin Mondeik has proven to be a force in the area, and most recently at Norway Speedway where he has been stacking up feature wins.  Chad Butz, fresh off his win in the White Race at WIR will look to recapture some glory at Norway Speedway after winning the Championship there a year ago. Defending TUNDRA titlist Riley Stenjem will also have plenty of eyes on him as he’s proven to not only be a quick learner, but a team that can get good at any race track in a hurry.

Some of the other outsiders to watch will be Andy Monday, who has seen success in limited visits to Norway, former TUNDRA Rookie of the Year Brock Heinrich, former TUNDRA feature winner Colin Reffner, former Big 8 Series Champion Max Kahler, top EPYK Media Rookie contender Barrett Polhemus, and the man who will race anything at any time (and has the Championships to back it up) James Swan.

Among some of the locals to watch aside from Lindsley will be Jason Wells, who set fast time for the Stateline Challenge two weks ago, Tanner Kelly, whose family has seen a ton of success at the track, and Robbie Iverson who has already had his share of visits to Norway Victory Lane in his young career.

TUNDRA will be joined by the Norway Super Stocks, Sportsman, and 4 Bangers. Fan gates open at 5pm, Ken’s Sports Qualifying is at 5:30, and racing begins at 7 pm.

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (May 14, 2022) – Casey Johnson outmuscled a field full of champions and challengers in Saturday afternoon’s The Bear 66 Presented by Stump Ford as part of Great Lakes Testing Round One at Wisconsin International Raceway. It was his second consecutive season-opening win in TUNDRA Super Late Model Series openers.

Behind Johnson, Justin Mondeik was able to slip past fast qualifier Jeff VanOudenhoven to score the runner-up spot over the former track Champion. Sawyer Effertz and a hard-charging Braison Bennett rounded out the Top Five.

Post-Race Interview with Casey Johnson

It was more than just another impressive day at the track for Johnson as he had to recover from an early slip to 15^th.  Due to some frantic racing in front of him, the inside line sank, leaving Johnson to wait patiently for his opportunities. Those opportunities would be presented to him through some early cautions and the right lane choices.

The biggest shake up of the race came after a lap 12 caution involving Max Kahler and Brock Heinrich. Justin Mondeik was able to wrestle the lead away from early-race leader Jordan DeVoy and secure the top spot while the field sorted out behind him.  Just two laps later DeVoy would spin exiting turn four while racing shoulder-to-shoulder with Grant Griesbach.

On the restart both Johnson and Ken’s Sports Fast Qualifier Jeff VanOudenhoven found themselves in the mix.  VanOudenhoven shot around the outside of Mondeik on lap 16 while Johnosn found himself bottled up behind a furious battle between Griesbach and Dalton Zehr. That battle came to a head with both spinning coming out of turn four on the following lap.

VanOudenhoven outpaced Mondeik on the restart while Jesse Oudenhoven took advantage of a bobble to get past Mondeik. Johnson followed in his tire tracks to secure a Third on lap 18. He wasted no time putting pressure on Oudenhoven, who was also closing the gap on Van Oudenhoven.

Johnson nosed past Oudenhoven on lap 21 and tucked in behind VanOudenhoven. He patiently waited for the right opportunity which came on lap 24. Johnson powered to the outside of VanOudenhoven and set sail into the lead.

Despite a few more showings of the yellow, there was no denying Johnson his second straight TUNDRA season-opening win at the half-mile.  He would go on to build his lead while Mondeik slowly chipped away at Second Place and stole it from Van Oudenhoven late.

The win was Johnson’s fifth of his TUNDRA career, moving him one behind second-place Dennis Prunty. It was also his 26^th Top Five, placing him three behind Dalton Zehr’s leading 29.

The next event for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series is the Bev Aschenbrenner Memorial at Marshfield Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 11. TUNDRA will be joined by the Legends, Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Series, and Bandits. Fan gates open at 4:30 with qualifying at 5:45 and racing beginning at 7.
